Lloyd Honeybrook

Lloyd Honeybrook is a 22 year-old saxophonist and sound artist already establishing and extending his own distinct and exciting sound throughout the east coast of Australia. He began performing and improvising in acoustic contexts at first with jazz groups throughout his early teenage years but quickly became fascinated with Sydney's burgeoning avant-garde and improvisation scene through exposure to the What Is Music? and NOW now festivals and concert series, quickly becoming involved with the performance and organisation of the latter.

Recently, the bulk of his work has involved the use of guitar amp feedback combined with and controlled by acoustic instruments, specifically the saxophone (the feedback saxophone, or 'feedbax'), building his own custom feedback-sensitive microphones using reverse-polarised speaker cones. This work was extensively explored during 2008 in his Bachelor of Visual Arts Honours year, which was completed with first-class Honours at the University of Sydney's art school, Sydney College of the Arts, under the guidance of sound and installation artist Joyce Hinterding. Lloyd has also completed a Bachelor of Arts in Media and Communications and an Advanced Diploma of Journalism since completing high school at Sydney Grammar School in 2005.

As an outcome of his Honours years, Lloyd published four custom lathe-cut 7" records and an accompanying exegesis. The body of work surrounding the 'feedbax' is still being explored and performed in many contexts including improvised music performances, studio recording, sound art/installations, drone, noise and punk, and was performed at the NOW now festival 2009 and the Make It Up Club's 10th Anniversary festival (2008). Formal academic study pertaining to the 'feedbax' is expected to be continued in 2010.

Lloyd is currently involved in projects with or has collaborated with the following artists: Robbie Avenaim, Jim Denley, Martin Ng, Brendan Walls, Robin Fox, Sean Baxter, Erkki Veltheim, Clayton Thomas, Clare Cooper, Jeff Henderson, The Splinter Orchestra, Hammeriver, The Pure Evil Trio, Sun of the Seventh Sister, and Occult Blood , as well as being active throughout both the Sydney and Melbourne Rock/Punk/Metal/DIY Noise scenes.
