Cor Fuhler Netherlands
Cor Fuhler
Netherlands-based Cor Fuhler works in the improvised field of electronic and contemporary music scenes. Piano is his main instrument, and he seeks to take it (and many other keyboards) musically beyond usual perceptions. Fuhler also manipulates sounds through turntables, Mbiras, strings etc. and also filters them through a PowerBook (the latest tool of choice for the underground improviser) or through analogue synths. He often builds his own instruments/instalations such as the Keyolin. "Fuhler, an Amsterdam-based musical inventor surrounded himself with traditional and original instruments. Among them were grand piano (played in unconventional ways) and "keyolin" (a cross of keyboard, stationary violin and a two-sided bow loosely modeled on a hacksaw). Even casual listeners probably have encountered pianists who pluck strings inside the instrument or play "prepared" pianos that have been altered by mechanical devices. Fuhler's experiments, however, audaciously updated these techniques, the musician using mallets, bottles and found objects to create other-worldly sounds (often with astonishing speed and dexterity). Fuhler's keyolin playing, meanwhile, rendered him a Paganini of 21st Century experimentation." Cor has had several releases including the acclaimed solo piano cd "7 CC IN I0", the piano trio release "Bellagram" featuring legendary percussionist Han Bennink, and he is a member of Keith Rowe's MIMEO.

David Tolley / Ren Walters Australia
David Tolley
David Tolley is a well respected mentor of improvised music making and art creation in Melbourne. He is known for his masterful command of the bass violin, as well as a deeply rooted sensibility in real time music making, culminating in many uniquely orchestrated collaborations, and cross media projects. He is also a practicing artist, with output in both sculpture and painting. He sees no boundary between known mediums of artistic expression, and has developed a comprehensive language and approach which is both earnest and definitive.

Ren Walters is a Melbourne based guitarist who has been active in refining his own musical language which has developed through experimentation and non-conventional use of sounds alongside the guitar. He has incorporated projected video pieces and visuals into his live improvisations which have broadened the scope of his performances . Ren has collaborated with a long list of national and international artists in his musical career.

Utilising an array of instrumentation including analogue and digital electronics, guitar, saxophones, tapes, accordion, percussion and sampler, Dworzec produce what can be descibed as 'textural improvisations'. Farmers Manual Austria
Farmers Manual
Farmers Manual (FM) - a seminal electronic group which ambitiously explores the interface between live digital audio and video synthesis. FM constructs complex digital networks which utilise data streams to trigger hypervirtuosic digital audio and video transformations which are in themselves a potent allegory for the information age.

Their albums No Back Up (Mego), FSCK (OR) and Explorers We (OR) have met with international critical acclaim.

FM were awarded the grand prix at the 28th International Festival of New Media (Montreal) 1999. In awarding the prize the jury noted :

'The Jury would like to honour the pioneering work of Austrian Internet artists, FARMERS MANUAL, who have succeeded in making the cybernetwork into a Net Work of awe and beauty. Self-reflective and transparent, they mixmaster soundcollage, streamed video and interNetional automation. Connnecting in realive time to the wiredworld, this collective has expanded the true democratic impulse of the internet, allowing public intervention and contribution at all levels, from software to content. Although working on the outer bounds of New Media, they evoke the mesmerising energy and wonder rarely seen since the earliest days of the invention of cinema.'

'Points of comparison are completely elusive. Frenetic beats jostle with shards of blistering electronic noise and all manner of high strangeness...... a lot of artists have a great deal of catching up to do if they are to remain relevant. Awesome.' (John Everall, The Wire Magazine (UK))

Greg has been incubating his tourettic frenzy in the rarefied Hobart improvised music scene. There is something fundamentally interesting about twitches, they can tell us something profound about humanity. 'from one moment to the next, his violin might sound like a subway car screeching to a halt, the wailing of jimi hendrix's guitar, or a gently gurgling mechanical toy. from the cacophony arose memorable jazz riffs and paganini style virtuosity' the new york times

'jon rose put c&w, power tools and socio-political parody into a blender and out poured many inspired moments, hearing history being made on the spot - like nothing else on the face of the earth' downbeat magazine

'a process began by which the very being of the violin - physically, musically, and historically - would be taken apart and reformed piece by piece. today, when so much contemporary music is just so much con, the music of Jon Rose seems to cut through the layers of musicological schlock with impunity' ear magazine

'jon rose kicked off with an intense and highly charged performance, on a violin played with a bow equipped with a pressure sensor.....Rose triggered cello samples, conjured up sounds by waving his bow in the air, and even used it to play another bow. His high precision playing demonstrated to stunning effect how electronics can enhance the capabilities of a traditional instrument.' the wire

Minit was formed by Jasmine Guffond and Torben Tilly in Sydney in 1997. Their music is minimal, ambient, electronic composition which utilizes sample technology and dub-oriented mixing techniques, resulting in ecstatic drones, pulses and intermittent beats with subtle harmonic and melodic intonations. Their music explores repetition and its slippage's, opening up an elastic perceptual relation to the passing of time. Minit are interested in pychoacoustics and the emergence of the "ghost melody" through certain harmonic relations and their fragmentation.
