WHAT IS MUSIC FESTIVAL 1994
JON ROSE presented by SIMA With Guests TONY BUCK CHRIS ABRAHAMS MICHAEL SHERIDAN
Over the last 20 odd years, Jon Rose has taken the violin on a quite radical and often traumatic musical journey. Starting out with 'serious' classical training in England, he became known in that did not follow the predictable and often boring American Jazz models. Since 1980 he has been semi-permanently on tour throughout the world of new jazz, new music, and the sound art festivals. Apart from touring his own projects and playing solo he works with other luminaries such as Fred Frith, Butch Morris, Shelly Hirsch, Derek Bailey & Eugene Chadbourne. As was pointed out when he was last in Australia two years ago "during a Rose performance the music may tour many reference points from jazz standards, heavy metal, rock, country & western, noise to top 40 kitsch as he constructs and deconstructs different aural contents".
"John Rose put the music industry into a blender an came up with something like nothing else on the face of the earth" DOWNBEAT MAGAZINE
IMPROVISING ORCHESTRA presented by SIMA & Kitchen Sink The "Kitchen Sink" Festival series was created by Max Lyandvert to combat the lack of performing opportunities for improvised music in Sydney. The "Kitchen Sink" Festival series has put on diverse styles of improvised music, ranging form acoustic to noise, from solos to established ensembles. The "Sydney Improvisers' Orchestra" attempts to combine all these aspects of improvisation into one event. The orchestra presents improvised music in two environments: the 1st a combination of impros where the musicans spontaneously select up to 3 others for an improvisation lasting up to 3 minutes: the 2nd where the complete orchestra plays together. MEMBERS: Eddie Bronson, Roger Dean, Veren Grigorov, Max Lyandvert, Stewart Huner, Oren Ambarchi, Rob Avenaim & special guests.

JOHN ZORNS "COBRA' Organised by oren Ambarchi Prompted by Trevor Brown
COBRA is a "game" piece designed in 1984 by American composer John Zorn. Many of Zorn's game pieces and compositions are designed for improvising musicans. Zorn believes, the key to harnessing the talents of the improvising musician is to take full advantage of their potential by "putting them in inspiring contexts that spark them to even greater heights". His game piece, COBRA does just that. The game allows the players to call up musical situations - duets, personnel and dynamic changes, group imitations, fade-ins and outs, memory systems & more. This is achieved through as set of hank signals; there is no musical notation to the piece and no time durations. The players improvise within the restrictions of this context and can determine how long it lasts, how quickly it moves etc. Players can trash the predictable at any time via a built in guerilla system.
"COBRA" ORAN AMBACHI At a COBRA performance, a listener can expect anything form rapid textural changes, dense noise, numerous musical genres juxtaposed against others & much more. COBRA has been organised by Sydney musician Oren Ambarbhi. Ambarchi played guitar in a Septemter 93' New York performance of COBRA, Zorn prompting the game. The Sydney performance will be prompted by Trevor Brown.

MU-MESONS & PHLEGM
The MU-MESONS are totally uncompromising in their musical and visual activities. Utilising antiquated electronic synthesisers, effects units and Mellotronic sampling apparatus, they deliver a sound that is completely unique and uncontrollable. Put that alongside of abnormal psychological and mental states that the performers have been labelled withand medicated for, true improvisation has never had a better companion. PHLEGM compromises of Oren Ambarchi on modified Zogrofarkis guitar and vocals, Nick Kanuissis on 3-string bass and twisted vocals & Rob Avenaim on gretsch drums, samples and vocals. They have played in New York as part of a festival celebrating John Zorn's 40th birthday & also performed gigs all over Japan in October '93. A PHLEGM performances promises anything from whacked vocal nonsense, blasts of pure noise, guitar pyrotechnics, cave-man drumming etc. PHLEGM will have their debut CD out on Melbourne Label "Dr Jim's" and Zorn will be released a live Phlegm track on a Knitting Factory compilation CD. Musical de-contruction at its finest.
